Scholarships for 13 Afghan Students awarded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

An award ceremony took place on Wednesday in the German-Afghan University Guest House, when 13 Afghan students received their official stipend certificates. This will allow them to start post-graduate courses in Germany in different fields of study within the ‘Public Policy and Good Governance’ and the ‘Development-Related Postgraduate Course’ programmes.

Scholarships were presented by the German Academic Exchange Service’s Director, Dr. Natalie Sharifzadeh. Special guests were Mr. David Majid, representing the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education, Ms. Sandra Wassong from the Cultural Department of the German Embassy as well as representatives of Kabul’s DAAD Information Centre.

The 13 students, of which six were women, came from all different regions in Afghanistan and were the best of almost 240 applicants, who participated in the selection process of summer 2013. The overall value of these scholarships amounts to 400 000€ and they include a two year Master’s programme as well as intensive German language courses before. Among the university cities students will be sent to were Berlin, Dresden, Magdeburg, Erfurt, Duisburg, Passau and Osnabrück.
